Alton Aim to be Top of the Props

The Prop Idol bandwagon rolled into Basingstoke RFC on 30 March and Alton players stormed through to take both qualifying places.

In a very competitive round Charlie Hibbert won the event and Tom Bugler was runner up; both will now compete in the final along with the qualifiers of the other heats, on 14 April as a curtain-raiser for the match between the Royal Navy and London Irish Academy teams in Portsmouth.

Coaching will again be provided by Neal Hatley of London Irish, and the competitors will meet legendary England and British Lions prop Jason Leonard MBE, before competing for the top honour of Hampshire's Prop Idol.

This is the third year for the Prop Idol competition, a Hampshire RFU initiative aimed at improving safety in rugby through the teaching of good technique particularly for front row players.

The competition is aimed at players the U13 and U14 age-groups and the techniques are valid for players in all positions in rugby.

In addition to specialist coaching the competition includes tests for strength, stamina, agility and a good scrummaging body position.
