Alton are top of the MasterClass

For two days during half-term week, more than 80 rugby players aged between the ages of seven and 15 got the chance to work on their passing, handling, tackling, rucking and running skills, giving them the opportunity to learn from experienced London Irish Community coaches.

Throughout the two-day course, the 'MasterClassers' got to work on their fitness and had lots of fun playing various games and competitions.

One of the highlights of the camp was when two London Irish first-team stars Delon Armitage and Declan Danaher dropped by to join in the fun. The guys helped with the coaching and even joined in a few of the drills and games much to the children’s delight!

They were then invited into the club-house where they took part in a special Q&A and autograph session.

“It’s great to get involved with the Community Department’s MasterClasses and see how these courses really do help the participants develop their rugby skills," said Exiles' and England A star Declan Danaher.

"Both Delon and I had a fantastic time down at Alton RFC helping with the coaching then chatting with them about our rugby careers. We’d like to wish them all the best for the future and encourage them to keep playing and training hard!”

As part of the course each participant will also get the chance to go to the Madejski Stadium to see the Exiles in action. The club will be arranging a special trip to Reading in December and look forward to seeing Delon and Declan on the pitch.

ARFC Junior Chairman David Gwyther paid tribute to the Exiles' efforts.

“We’ve all had another brilliant time with London Irish. The visit from Delon and Declan was also very special. Not many children can say they’ve trained with professional players but now our members can!

"I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone at London Irish and look forward to welcoming them back soon! Both the children and parents alike have already been asking when the next MasterClass will be.”
