As a warm up, there was initially a 20 minute game for the squad, which Farnborough edged by 15-12, Alton's tries came from Ed Simmons and Jack Messenger, Joe Gwyther added 2 extra points. The game was characterised by Farnborough's stronger running and more physical forwards versus Alton's free-flowing backs.

The two respective 1st XVs then played a competitive match 20 minutes each way, as preparation for league matches next week. There's a truism that rugby matches are won in the forwards and the backs decide the margin. Never was this truer than in this game. Alton edged the set pieces, particularly the scrum, and provided their backs with plenty of good quality ball. The marked difference between the teams was the quality of the back play ... Alton's back line (10 through 15) each ran in a try, with 2 conversions, 1 by Joe Gwyther and 1 by Ed Simmons.
