Five Tries for Fran

Aldershot & Fleet

This was easily Alton's best performance of the season so far with plenty of commitment, passing to hand, support and teamwork.

Again the game had to be staged on the SEME Reservation ground in Bordon as most of Anstey Park was still waterlogged.  Despite the final result Aldershot and Fleet dominated the first quarter of the game, keeping Alton pinned back into their own half and taking the lead when Alton were penalised for offside.  This gave the visitors a lot of confidence and they eventually forced a scrum inside Alton's 22 metre but unfortunately the put-in was deemed to have been fed and Alton broke out, finally entering the opposition half on the twenty minute mark. Alton worked their way forward and following a line-out 10 metres out, drove for the line only to be held. However, the ball was recycled enabling prop, James Rowe, to loop around the lineout along the touch line to score his first try of the day. A few minutes later another lineout success gave the opportunity for winger, Alex Hayward, to also crash over in the corner. Alton now began to play with more purpose although too many passes were not going to hand.  Eventually scrumhalf, George Trantham, attacked and broke the defence taking the score to 15 - 0.  Just before half-time Rowe collected his second try when he charged over from some 20 metres out and this time Trantham converted. Half-time score 22 - 3.

Two minutes into the second half stand-off, Mark Crowther, took a quick penalty and some very slick passing released winger, Fran Williams, to collect his first score of the afternoon.  For the next twenty minutes, Aldershot and Fleet reasserted the defensive qualities shown in the first half but they tired as the final quarter approached.  Alton took full advantage of this and took to a running and swift passing game claiming five further tries.  The first to score was lock, Chris Gregory.  The other four were all accredited to Fran Williams giving him five in total, the Man of the Match award and a large bar bill; Trantham succeeded with two conversions. Final score 56 - 3.

Alton were scheduled to travel to Kingsclere next Saturday but due to waterlogged ground, this league game has now been re-scheduled for Saturday, 27th February, kick off 14:30, when Alton will be hoping to continue their improvement.
