Alton U15's Win Despite the Wind

Sun 07 Mar 2010, 11:00

Gosport & Fareham

5 - 29

Alton

We travel to the windy pitches of Gosport ready for a tough match. Despite the wind the weather was perfect for a game of Rugby.

The first five minutes we were in our own 22 soaking up a large amount of pressure from Gosport. An excellent defence held the ball up twice which we eventually turned over thanks to great work from the forwards. The first time the backs got ball from our scrum on halfway we had our first score, a lovely timed pass from Dylan Saralis drawing two players and releasing Jack Bilsland for the opening try.

Immediately from the restart we retained the ball and built up the phases right into their 22. Quick hands across the backs gave Nathaniel Ward a score which was converted by Saralis. We had a huge amount of possession which Gosport were taking well. We had a scrum in their 22 from which we used a move in the backs enabling Will Hearne to battle his way through for the third try of the half. This was converted by Bilsland producing a half time score of 19-0 up to the visitors.

We managed to put pressure on the opposition from the second half kick off enabling Alton to break through the Gosport defence with . This pressure had to break their defence and did with Gareth Robinson scoring in the corner. However, the swirling wind prevented Saralis from making the conversion. Alton continued to retain possession and put significant pressure on Gosport. Will Foster made another of his blistering, barging runs to score with Bilsland missing the conversion. Both teams were beginning to tire and changes were required. The pack was chopped and changed and the back line altered, leaving Bilsland and Haydn Martin in the centres, a great partnership. Gosport managed to retain possession from there on in but Alton held out with good defence from the forwards and Bastareaud-like defence from Martin. However the opposition managed to sneak a try at the death of the game with a debatable penalty decision from the referee.

Good game all-round, a few changes may need to be made (Martin at centre!?).
