Alton Just Fail to Gain Losing Bonus Point at Isle of Wight

Sat 12 Apr 2014, 15:00

Isle of Wight

19 - 10

Alton

IOW

Although this was a typical end of season fixture with nothing but pride resting on the result, it was a closely fought encounter; as was the opening game of the season between these two sides, although the result was reversed.

IoW opened attacking Alton’s defence which held well but eventually a penalty was given away for off-side allowing the home team to open the scoring 3 – 0. Alton soon struck back when the IoW’s No 9 attempted a clearance kick from behind a scrum. This was charged down and centre Joe Harris pounced on the loose ball with Simon Ford converting the try to take the score to 3 – 7.

Straight from the kick-off, IoW hit back when Alton failed to find touch with a clearance kick, their backs scoring out on the right wing. The conversion was unsuccessful, Score 8 – 7.

Alton started to string some good moves together involving both forwards and backs, but let themselves down with too many knock-ons, over exuberant passing and poor kicking.  Shortly before half-time Alton were penalised again for off-side taking the score to 11 – 7.

Now in the second half Alton again played with gusto but the frailty of their passing again let them down. The only try of this period came when Alton were penalised again for not rolling away.  IoW took the kick quickly and went over in the corner. Score 16 - 7.

Ford closed the gap with a long distance penalty to take the score to 16 – 10; but IoW were awarded three  more points when Alton were penalised in front of their own posts.

Alton, to their credit, did not give up and spent most of the last quarter in the opposition half. Hooker Luke Parratt was unlucky when he just failed to secure a pass with the line beckoning and full back Bren Sumner was stopped literally in his tracks when at full speed he ran straight into a home defender. Ford was unfortunate not to convert at least one of two long range penalties which would have given Alton a well-deserved losing bonus point.

Final Score 19 points to 10.

Match referee was Catalin Dinu (HRURS).
