Alton

Alton started well in their first game in the hampshire under 13 plate competition.
Having failed to catch the ball from the Portsmouth kick – off, Alton eventually secured possession following the first scrum of the game which was awarded to them. The ball was shipped wide a dummy switch followed with Douglas Wickes outpacing the opposition to score under the posts. Alton continued to play heads up rugby and secured more points throughout the first half. Once Alton had achieved a lead of twentyone points the travelling subs were introduced to the game on a rolling basis. At half time, the entire Alton squad had been in action on the pitch and contributed to the fortytwo unaswered points scored.
The score line suggests that the game was rather one sided, however Portsmouth had proved threatening on numerous occasions including one passage of play when Portsmouth were camped on the Alton try line and vigorous defence from Alton was required to prevent an opposition score.
Alton scored two further tries at the start of the second half taking them to the fifty point margin set by HRFU. However with the agreement of the coaches and the referee there then followed another ten minutes of friendly play which produced two further tries for Alton, producing an unofficial match winning score of seventy points to nil.
The two facts that most pleased the coaches were that all ten tries were successfully converted making each score worth seven points and secondly that Alton conceded no points.
The Portsmouth coaching staff were very complementary of the way that Alton played and their handling skills, in particular they named Sebastian Foreman as man of the match.
Try scorers were as follows: Matt Butler (2), Josh Saunders (1), Max Rhodes (2), Tom Strachan (2) and Douglas Wickes (3).
These tries were converted by Douglas Wickes (6) and Ed Thomas (4)
Ed Thomas (Captain)
