Home Win for Alton

Alton

38 - 3

Southampton

Southampton

Alton began this match in the same manner as last week playing high speed controlled rugby and within a few minutes they were encamped in Southampton's half.

A good clearance kick from standoff Joe Gwyther and the forwards won back the ball in the ensuing lineout. The ball was quickly moved away by man of the match scrum half, Mark Crowther, but unfortunately winger, Ed Lowman, was forced into touch only ten metres short of the line.

Number 8, Tom Willis, took an excellent lineout ball and charged for the line, where he was driven over the line by his pack, Gwyther added the conversion, 7 - 0. Willis was a little less fortunate when he later knocked on into touch, only five metres out. Four minutes Alton were on the scoreboard again when Willis and Luke Parratt interchanged passes at least twice, Parratt claiming the points, but the conversion was missed, 12 - 0.

This galvanised Southampton into life and they spent the next fifteen minutes in Alton's half and only excellent defence by the home side kept them at bay.

Alton broke free on the half hour with Willis, again leading the way, charged into open space and was eventually halted. The Alton back division following up gave winger, Tom Burgess, the room to clear to glide through the defenders and touch down. Although the score was made just in from the touchline, a great kick from Gwyther took the score to 19 - 0. Alton lifted the pace and attack after attack eventually gave Burgess the opening for his second try and Alton's fourth, which secured the bonus point. Gwyther's successful conversion took the score to 26 - 0. Southampton attacked and almost immediately were awarded a penalty which they converted taking the half-time score to 26 - 3.

Most of the second half was played under leaden skies with a number of heavy rain squalls producing magnificent rainbows! This half was much more competitive and only Alton's stout resilience kept the visitors from scoring. Alton were able to add two  more tries, the first, when Burgess took his personal total to three by scampering down the right hand touch, 31 - 3. The sixth and final try came just before the end of the game when second row, Chris Gregory finished off a good flowing move with most of the side having been involved. Gwyther's successful conversion, four from six attempts took the final score to 38 - 3.

Next Saturday, Alton have a far more difficult task in front of them when they visit Locksheath Pumas for another Snows Hampshire League 2 match. Locksheath were the team relegated from Hampshire 1 last season and have so far won both their games with a better points difference than Alton of 109. However, for some reason, they have been deducted 5 league points and lie fifth in the table. This should be a very competitive fixture, with kick-off at 3 p.m.
