U13's Just Edge a Tight Game

Sun 20 Feb 2011, 11:00

Alton

24 - 22

Trojans

The half term break affected both sides with valuable players off on holiday, but judging by Trojans impressive winning record Alton always knew this was going to be a tight game. So it proved with both teams running in four tries and the victory only one by a margin of two points.

Trojans were the first to score with their outside centre profiting from a strike against the head and running in under the posts helped by some below par defence by Alton. However Alton bounced back with tries by Douglas Wickes and Tom Strachan both of which Wickes converted.

Trojans however came back and scored a good try in the corner giving the home side a 14 – 12 lead at half time.

The second half was equally well contested resulting in two tries each with both of Alton’s tries scored by Wickes. However Alton could never quite break the cycle of: score, concede, score, concede…

Consequently this was a very tight game where Trojans on many occasions showed better focus at the breakdown than Alton and this is something Alton will be working on over the next few weeks. However Alton showed a lot of character and good performances by the back row of Matt Butler, Tom Homans and Rhys Jenkins kept the home side in the hunt until the end of the game.

In the last few minutes of the game with Trojans camped on the Alton try line substitute hooker Nick Hughes took two strikes against the head effectively keeping Alton in the lead, and can be extremely proud of a good day’s work.

Alton therefore became the first Hampshire side to beat Trojans under 13’s squad this season.

Well done lads.
