Alton Men's Rugby

Men's rugby was first played at Alton in 1924 and since that time has seen many ups and downs.

The upsurge in playing strength during the eighties and nineties resulted in league and cup successes that saw the club rise to its highest level, including playing in London 2 South for a couple of seasons before fortunes saw us fall out of the London leagues altogether having been involved for almost 18 years.

After a long period of stabilisation, development and coaching, the Senior Men's teams of Alton are once again starting to show the promise that earned them success all those years ago. The 2016-17 season was one of consolidation with a successful emphasis on recruitment, retention and skills development, which culminated in a top-half table finish.

The objective for the 2017-18 season is to offer a serious challenge for the league with a finish much nearer to the sharp end!

For the first time in several seasons, Alton now have sufficient strength in depth to be able to regularly field a 2nd XV in the Hampshire Merit Tables.

Alton RFC currently run three senior men's sides, namely:

  • 1st XV – Play in Snows Group Hampshire League Division Two
  • 2nd XV – Play in Solent League 4
  • Masters XV (Vets) – Play for fun (they are old after all!)

It has always been Alton's ambition to be one of the leading clubs in Hampshire, and with our strong junior and colts' sections producing more and more talented young players for the senior teams, it is only a matter of time before the club attains this achievement.

And if the action on the field is doesn't make you want to join in then the social side off the pitch certainly will. Alton RFC is one of the most sociable and friendly clubs in the area and as one spectator once commented... "The action on the field isn't always pretty, but these guys sure know how to party!"
