Alton Rugby Football Club

U12s session plans

There are 3 types of session planned for the coming season set out as below.

These sessions will be run by the three main coaches; myself, Greg and Nick with support from the assistant coaches.

  1. T – Training at home, no guests
  2. TV – Training at home with a visiting team
  3. TA – Training away

1. T - Training at Home

Home sessions with no visitors will be divided in to two formats:

  1. Normal group session
  2. Pre tournament session

Normal group session

Warm-up and impact preparation – 20 minutes: 3 to 4 sections quick 10 minute drills, skill and game situation, groups rotate through

Game time: 3 teams in a rotation. 2 teams play each other while one team plays 'shadow rugby' where the emphasis will be on teaching game situation and positions at a moderate pace. 10 minutes of play per side with stoppage for coaching points. The last section will only leave about 10 minutes or so when we will do some kicking or playing to break the monotony.

Pre tournament session

A few weeks before the tournament the selected squad will get to go off with the coach going to the tournament with them, get issued with the kit and to run through everyone’s positions. They will do about 30 minutes of shadow rugby and specific coaching. The others will train as usual. This will happen after the warm-up and conditioning/grid work. There will be about 45 minutes in total. I will oversee this section to ensure:

  • Selection has been accurate/suitable
  • The diamond formation is being taught
  • Positions have been allocated appropriately

We will select 2 "show case" tournaments out of the 4 where there will be an "A" side selected. This is likely to include the Hampshire tournament. The least confident players will definitely be sent to the newcomers’ tournament. The other tournaments will be a mixed representation to maximise the team building aspects of the squad.

2. TV – Training at Home with a visiting team

We can not do the normal plan, the numbers will be too great, and the opportunity to get position and diamond formation against other opposition is too great. The session will be:

  • 20 minutes warm-up and upper body strengthening
  • 5 minute water break
  • 20 minutes for coaches to select teams, fill in register and go through basic game plan
  • 10 to 15 minute games with lots of stopping/freezing to explain the learning points

3. TA – Training Away

There is no plan for the session, we have to go with the other teams coaching plan. We will most likely play games so team selection will be dividing into teams that have mixed abilities. Each coach will emphasise the diamond formation above all else.
