Alton Rugby Football Club

Weekly update w/c 07 March

Gutted! Gutted! Gutted!
Losing at home to Gosport has left the lads bitterly disappointed, knowing that game was there to be won. Little mistakes cost us but we have to take the positives and move on, but without forgetting how it felt to lose such a close game. Gosport became champions with that win and this Alton side knows there’s nothing between them and the very best in Hampshire.

With Portsmouth losing we remain in third place. Our last League game is against Portsmouth on March 27th and a win should secure us second place in division 1 – that would be a fantastic achievement but win or lose we will remember what could have been. New Milton are relegated and the loser of the Petersfield v Basingstoke match will join them in division 2 next season.

Next up on Sunday is a home match v Tottonians, this is a friendly so everyone turning up will get game time. We won at Totts earlier in the season very convincingly, 19-59, but we expect them to put in a better performance this time.

Training is back at the usual time, 7pm on Thursday, unless we hear from Alton Town Council again! Watch out for any late notices.

Thanks again to everyone for contributing towards a fantastic fundraiser last Friday. We raised £650 clear profit and more importantly, had a great time doing so. The Edinburgh tour promises to be another successful venture. I feel very privileged to have coached this group of lads – some of them since they were 8 years old – but every one of them is valued whether they’ve been with us for 7 years, 7 months or 7 days. Watching them develop into one of Hampshire’s strongest squads and from boys to young men is a constant joy, I’m very proud of them as I’m sure every parent is. The journey isn’t over yet …
